LA Revilla, Norbert Torres surprise choices as Chot Reyes bares new Gilas pool members

LA Revilla of Mahindra and Norbert Torres of Phoenix are the surprise choices of Chot Reyes as Gilas Pilipinas on Sunday bared the 12 PBA players who will join the 12 cadets in the new national pool.

Also named to the 24-man pool were Calvin Abueva of Alaska, Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar, Blackwater's Art Dela Cruz, Terrence Romeo of GlobaPort, Jonathan Grey of Meralco, Bradwyn Guinto of NLEX, Raymond Almazan of Rain or Shine, SMB's June Mar Fajardo, Paul Lee of Star and Jayson Castro of TNT.

No one among the new members of the pool is above 30 as Reyes put a premium on youth in a program geared toward qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Among the surprise omissions are Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, Ranidel De Ocampo of TNT Katropa and Star forward Marc Pingris, who were part of the Gilas team from the 2013 Fiba Asia championship to last year's Fiba Olympic qualifiers.

Allein Maliksi gets Gilas call-up as Paul Lee dropped, for now, with meniscal tear

STAR forward Allein Maliksi has received a surprise call-up to the Gilas Pilipinas 5.0 pool after teammate Paul Lee was dropped temporarily due to a meniscal tear on his knee.

National coach Chot Reyes made the announcement as the Gilas pool converged for the first time on Tuesday ahead of the team's initial stint in the Seaba championships which the country will host from May 12-18.

"We made that decision just this morning," Reyes said as he addressed members of the Gilas pool at the start of the three-day training camp in Tagaytay.

Reyes bared the change is not permanent, telling he team that Paul Lee's "injury is being managed on a daily basis, so we decided to replace him - for now - with Allein Maliksi.

"Allein is on his way up, he should be able to join us soon."

From the members of the Gilas pool, absent from camp were Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar and SMB's June Mar Fajardo, who were excused after their teams figured in the last PBA Philippine Cup Finals.

Terrence Romeo was also excused, with Reyes revealing that the GlobalPort star guard has been bed-ridden for five days now due to an unknown illness.
