Brondial hopes to play in ‘Christmas Clasico’ between Star, Ginebra

Star forward Rodney Brondial is looking forward to playing in the PBA Philippine Cup “Christmas Clasico” against his former team Barangay Ginebra.

Brondial had aspire to play in the league’s Christmas offering last year as a member of the Gin Kings. A month before the big event, though, Ginebra dealt him to Barako in exchange for Jervy Cruz.

Although he missed the chance to play in what turned out to be a blockbuster Christams game, the former Adamson stalwart said he really never felt bad about being traded.

“Wala namang akong panghihinayang. Kasi nung lumipat ako ng Phoenix feeling ko napaganda rin ako kasi nabigyan ako ng playing time at nailabas ko kahit papaano ‘yung laro ko,” said the 26-year old, who was traded by the Fuel Master to the Star Hotshots in May as part of a nine-player, three-team deal.

Now with Star, Brondial said he is keeping his fingers crossed, hoping his dream would come true.

He said playing against the team that picked him sixth overall in the 2014 PBA draft is something “special.”

“I hope I would be given an opportunity to play against Ginebra. Not because ‘yun ang dati kong team but syempre alam naman natin kung gaano kasarap kalaban ‘yung Ginebra,” Brondial said.

Brondial knows its up to coach chito Victolero.

“Lagi naman akong ready ‘pag ginagamit e. ‘Yun lang, di lang natin alam kung kailan.”

sana nga mabigyan si Brondial ng chance to play and to prove his worth, may galaw naman at sipag though mabagal kung minsan. para at least ma-boost din confidence niya. also para hindi ganong kapagod sina Ping Rafi. Bawasan minutes ni Sangalang siguro.

Sigh of relief for Star as Lee suffers only minor injury in OT loss

Star fans can heave a sigh of relief now as spitfire guard Paul Lee dismissed any idea of serious injury after being hounded by an aching left leg in their game against Alaska.

Lee seemed to have hurt his leg after making a lay-up at the 10:22 mark of the fourth quarter, forcing him to troop to the bench for five minutes.

The Tondo-born guard, though, managed to return for the Hotshots but could not save his team from falling to 3-4 in the standings with Alaska making the big shots during the overtime.

“Nag-tight lang yung legs ko,” described Lee, who even played in the overtime.

Lee had a history of deflating injuries before, with the latest forcing him to miss a Gilas duty back in the Olympic qualifier preparations.

“Nag-harden lang yung sa quads ko kaya medyo masakit,” dismissed the 2016 Comeback Player of the Year, noting he was already checked by the team’s doctor.

Veteran PJ Simon eyes comeback after bout with chicken pox

While Star carried its dominant form in the Philippine Cup playoffs, veteran scoring guard Peter June Simon continues to watch his team at the sidelines.

Simon missed his fourth straight game on Saturday, though his veteran presence was hardly needed as the Hotshots humiliated the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 114-83 for a 1-0 lead in their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

After the Hotshots’ dominating win, Simon finally revealed what’s keeping him out of action.

“Chicken pox,” Simon told FOX Sports. “Kaya medyo matagal. Iniingatan natin kasi nasa playoffs na tayo. Contagious kasi yun.”

While he is already is to mingle with his teammates, Simon said he wants to fully heal as a precautionary measure.

“Ang importante ma-isolate ako and ngayon, ang importante fully recovered na ako para pagbalik ko sa team, wala talagang maapektuhan,”

And with the way the Hotshots are outclassing their foes in the team’s season-high fifth straight win, Simon is happy to see how rosy Star’s chances are for a semis seat.

“Ang ganda yung chance namin ngayon, di namin in-expect na ganito yung mapupuntahan, and hopefully magtuloy tuloy ng semis,” added the sweet-shooting Star veteram gunner.

But asked with his possible return, Simon said it will take a while, though he’s not ruling out the possibility of seeing action some time in the semis, if ever.

“Matagal pa eh, siguro (semis),” he said.

Star coach Chito Victolero also urged the Hotshots—from the players to the coaching staff—to show enough composure even when they’re put under duress, saying:

“We need to be composed the whole game. We need to control our emotions.”

I agree kay coach Chito, composure and controlling the emotions must be in check. Focus focus lang sa game, sa task, sa role nila. Kaya yan, tiwala lang..

Star looks for other options as Ratliffe still unavailable

Looks like American import Ricardo Ratliffe’s return to the pro league will have to wait a little longer.

The 6-foot-8 Ratliffe remains committed to his current club in South Korea and won’t be available anytime soon for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup that gets going on March 17, leaving the Star Hotshots with no recourse but to look for other options.

The former Missouri Tiger is tops on the Hotshots’ wishlist for the mid-season conference, but Ratliffe is still tied up with the Seoul Samsung Thunders who are in strong contention for the Korean Basketball League title with a current win-loss record of 28-14.

That leaves the Hotshots, fresh from a strong semifinals showing in the Philippine Cup under first-year coach Chito Victolero, to find for another reinforcement in the import-laced tournament which will feature reinforcements with a maximum height of 6-foot-10.

““(Team manager) Alvin (Patrimonio) (is) still working on it with the coaching staff,” Star team governor Rene Pardo told FOX Sports in an SMS message on Thursday afternoon.

So far, 6-foot-8 power forward Tony Mitchell, a former second round pick of the Detroit Pistons in the 2013 NBA rookie draft, is being linked to the Hotshots.

In an earlier report by FOX Sports, Ratliffe bared his plans of suiting up for the Hotshots once he finishes his commitments in South Korea where he’s also being eyed as a naturalized player candidate.

Asked if the Hotshots are willing to wait to secure the services of Ratliffe once he becomes available, Pardo said: “I think the coaching staff will have to make that decision based on the performance of the initial import if and when Ricardo becomes available.”

In his initial stint with Star last season as replacement to one-time Best Import awardee Denzel Bowles, Ratliffe registered monstrous numbers of 27.50 points, 18.12 rebounds, 2.38 assists and 1.25 blocks per game while leading Star to a near upset of top-seeded San Miguel Beer in the quarterfinals.

Kung ang maximun height ay 6'10" i think dapat sila maghanap pa ng mas malaki para may pantapat man lang tayo kay junemar. Yan ang weak spot ng team natin matagal na. We need a big center! Sana si james mays na lang!
